How High Should You Mount Your TV? (Stop Mounting It Too High!)

We've all seen it: a TV mounted so high it nearly touches the ceiling, forcing everyone to crane their necks like they are in the front row of a movie theater. This is comfortably known as r/TVTooHigh.
The Golden Rule: Eye Level
For the most comfortable viewing experience, the center of your TV screen should be at eye level when you are seated. For a standard sofa, your eye level is typically 42 inches from the floor.
The Math
Measure the distance from the floor to your eyes when seated. That is where the center of the TV should be. If you have a 65-inch TV (which is roughly 32 inches tall), the bottom of the TV should be about 26 inches off the floor.
Exceptions
- Fireplaces: Sometimes you have no choice but to mount above a mantel. In this case, use a pull-down MantelMount or a tilting mount to angle the screen down towards your eyes.
- Bedrooms: When lying down, you naturally look up. Mounting a TV higher in a bedroom is acceptable and often preferred.
- Bars/Standing Areas: If people will be standing or walking around (like in a kitchen or bar), mount the TV at standing eye level (approx. 60+ inches).
